Patent number: 8375757Abstract: A method for shot peening wherein the work is processed by being hit by shot materials that are shot by compressed air, and a machine for carrying out the method are provided. By the present invention the status of a work can be measured while the work is being processed. The requirements for maintaining and calibrating the sensor that is used for the measurement are reduced because the wear of the sensor is prevented. The method for shot peening is to process a work by shooting the shot materials with compressed air from a shooting nozzle against the work. The shooting nozzle is equipped with a transducer that detects elastic waves and transduces them to high-frequency electrical signals. The elastic waves are generated when the shot materials pass through the shooting nozzle. The characteristic values of the shot materials, which pass through the shooting nozzle, are measured and monitored based on the signals.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 2008Date of Patent: February 19, 2013Assignee: Sintokogio, Ltd.Inventor: Hiroaki Suzuki

Patent number: 8328603Abstract: An apparatus for stress shot peening of a coil spring is disclosed. The apparatus of the present invention is constructed such that coil springs, which are compressed and clamped by corresponding spring clamping units (20) facing each other, are rotated on their own axes and are simultaneously supplied into the shot room (10) for shot peening. Therefore, the present invention can markedly enhance the internal stress of the coil spring, compared to a coil spring treated by the conventional shot peening apparatus. Furthermore, in the present invention, because the coil springs are clamped by the corresponding spring clamping units facing each other and are simultaneously rotated and moved into the shot room for shot peening, various kinds of side load coil springs, as well as a typical cylindrical coil spring, can be evenly treated throughout the entire surface thereof by shot peening.Type: GrantFiled: July 10, 2008Date of Patent: December 11, 2012Assignee: Dae Won Kang Up Co., Ltd.Inventors: Chan-Gi Jung, Ui-Seok Yoon

Patent number: 8252226Abstract: A high-energy treated cutter comprising a substrate having a top surface, an outer region, and an inner core and a wear resistant layer coupled to the top surface. The high-energy treatment alters the substrate's physical properties so that the inner core provides greater toughness and the outer region provides greater hardness, and greater abrasion resistance. The layer is protected prior to commencement of the treatment. In one embodiment, a cover is positioned to surround the layer and then the cutter undergoes treatment, wherein the cutter is subjected to impact forces with other cutters. In another embodiment, the cutter is positioned within a recess formed in a tray table, thereby providing protection to the layer. The cutter is secured in place via vacuum, glue, or weight. A spray nozzle applies shot material directed to the substrate of the cutter, thereby applying the impact forces to alter the substrate's properties.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 2009Date of Patent: August 28, 2012Assignee: Varel International Ind., L.P.Inventors: Michael R. Patent number: 8033152Abstract: A metallic article with improved fatigue performance and resistance to corrosive attack and stress corrosion cracking is produced by treating a first area of a metallic article with a first surface treatment that induces a specified amount of cold work. A second, sacrificial area of the metallic article in electrical communication with the first area is treated with a second surface treatment that induces an amount of cold work higher than that of the first surface treatment. Due to the differences in cold work resulting from the different surface treatments, the second area of the metallic article is less noble than the first area and is therefore more susceptible to corrosive attack. As a result, the second sacrificial area will preferentially corrode leaving the first area protected from corrosive attack. Compressive residual stresses induced in the surface of the metallic article through the surface treatments improve the fatigue performance and resistance to stress corrosion cracking.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 2010Date of Patent: October 11, 2011Assignee: Surface Technology Holdings, Ltd.Inventor: Paul S. Patent number: 7997110Abstract: In substantial volume production operations involving hot blow forming or hot stamping of aluminum alloy sheet workpieces, debris largely comprised of particles of aluminum alloy material adheres to critical forming surfaces of the heated steel tools. This debris mars forming surfaces and causes defects in aluminum alloy parts formed against them. Such aluminum-rich debris may be reactively transformed to change its adherent properties and removed from tool surfaces without removing the heated tool from production. In one embodiment, a hot sacrificial magnesium sheet may be formed on the tool(s) to alloy with aluminum debris and carry it from the forming surface.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 2009Date of Patent: August 16, 2011Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations LLCInventors: Jon T. Publication number: 20110192205Abstract: A process for treating a surface of a component to improve its surface finish and induce residual compresses stresses in a near-surface region of the component. The process entails performing a first peening operation to form residual compressive stress layers in the near-surface region of the component, and then performing at least a second peening operation to cause surface smoothing of the surface of the component while retaining residual compressive stresses in the near-surface region of the component. The first peening operation comprises wet glass bead peening at a first intensity with a first glass bead media, and the second peening operation comprises wet glass bead peening at a second intensity with a second glass bead media, wherein the second intensity is lower than the first intensity and the second glass bead media is smaller than the first glass bead media.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 9, 2010Publication date: August 11, 2011Applicant: GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANYInventor: Swami Ganesh

Patent number: 7992416Abstract: Ultrasonic peening treatment is desirable where an application of a compressive stress is helpful to reduce the incidence of crack formation on highly stressed parts. Ultrasonic peening treatment can be performed in field applications without requiring a rotor to be removed from the machine. The system includes an acoustic element that excites peening media within a peen chamber. A frame is attachable to an assembled turbine rotor component and includes support structure engageable with the acoustic element. The frame is cooperable with a chamber tooling that defines and encloses the peen chamber together with the turbine rotor component.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 2006Date of Patent: August 9, 2011Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Raymond Joseph Stonitsch, Diane Marie Beagle, Jean-Michel Duchazeaubeneix, Patrick Cheppe, Philippe Jacob, Vincent Desfontaine

Publication number: 20110179843Abstract: A method for hardening a surface of a component in a wind turbine is disclosed. The component to be hardened includes a surface and the surface is applied with a blasting material by ultrasound waves. The component is a part of a drive or a drive housing, a bearing surface, a gear wheel or a pinion. The ultrasound waves are emitted with the aid of a piezo electric transducer.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 26, 2011Publication date: July 28, 2011Inventor: Klaus Ventzke

Patent number: 7984537Abstract: Both the inner and outer circumferential surfaces of a coil spring are peened by passing sequential segments of the spring around offset pulleys mounted within a peening cabinet. As the spring is pulled around one of the pulleys, the coils fan out from the pulley to permit the peening media to impact portions of the inner and outer circumferential surfaces of the spring, and as the spring is pulled around the other pulley, the portions of the surfaces not peened as the segment traveled around the first pulley will be peened.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 2007Date of Patent: July 26, 2011Assignee: Electronics Inc.Inventor: Jack Champaigne
