  • Patent number: 6715379
Abstract: An all terrain vehicle comprising a V-belt continuously variable transmission and a gear-type transmission, being capable of transmitting drive torque from an engine with controlled engine braking but without loss of the torque, thereby giving a rider an improved driving feel. The V-belt continuously variable transmission and the gear-type transmission are placed in this order from upstream in a power transmission path from the engine to wheels. A one-way clutch for transmitting only the drive torque from the engine to the wheel and a torque limiter for transmitting the torque less than a predetermined value are arranged in parallel, between, e.g., a countershaft and forward intermediate gears fitted onto the countershaft.

  • Patent number: 6682454
Abstract: A planetary gear reduction device with a torque limiter function includes a housing, an input shaft rotatably supported by one end of the housing and connected to a power source so as to input a torque from the power source, an output shaft rotatably supported by the other end of the housing so as to output the torque from the power source, a reduction gear train provided between the input shaft and the output shaft and constituted of a plurality of gears meshing with one another, and a torque limiting mechanism mounted in the reduction gear train. In this device, when an excessive torque is generated in the output shaft, torque transmission from the input shaft to the output shaft is disconnected by the action of the torque limiting mechanism.

  • Patent number: 6676557
Abstract: A clutch arrangement for a power tool having a multi-speed transmission. The clutch arrangement includes a clutch member and a follower member. The clutch member is coupled to a member of the transmission that is proximate the torsional input of the transmission and which must be in a non-rotating position to permit the transmission to perform a torque multiplication operation. The follower member is biased into engagement with the clutch member to inhibit relative rotation therebetween. As the clutch member and the transmission member are coupled to one another, the transmission is able to perform a torque multiplication operation. When, however, the torsion that is exerted onto the clutch member is sufficient to overcome the frictional engagement between the follower and clutch members, the clutch member, and the transmission member, rotate, thereby inhibiting the capability of the transmission to continue to perform the torque multiplication operation.

  • Publication number: 20030041680
Abstract: A starter motor for cranking an internal combustion engine includes an electric motor, a planetary gear device for reducing a rotational speed of the electric motor, and a shock-absorbing device that absorbs excessive impact transmitted from the engine to the starter motor. The planetary gear device has an annular member contacting a separating plate that separates the planetary gear device from the electric motor. A depressed portion such as a circular groove is formed on an axial end surface of the annular member. Lubricant retained in the depressed portion lubricates the end surface that rotates relative to the separating plate to absorb the excessive impact transmitted from the engine, and thereby abrasion wear of the end surface is suppressed.

  • Patent number: 6419606
Abstract: A drive assembly is operable to move control surfaces on wings of an aircraft. The drive assembly may include a gear reduction assembly which is driven by a pair of motors. The drive assembly has output members which are connected with the control surfaces on the wings of the aircraft. Torque limiting brake assemblies are operable between an engaged condition in which they are effective to prevent rotation of output members and a disengaged condition in which the brake assemblies are ineffective to prevent rotation of the output members. Actuator assemblies are connected with the torque limiting brake assemblies. The actuator assemblies are operable to effect operation of the torque limiting brake assemblies from a disengaged condition to an engaged condition in response to transmission of predetermined torques through the actuator assemblies to the output members.

  • Patent number: 5857380
Abstract: To reduce the size of a starter for installing it in a smaller engine compartment, the rotational speed of the starter motor has to be high and it is reduced to a certain speed through a reduction device to obtain a higher torque. To realize a high reduction ratio in a small planetary gear reduction device, an impact force imposed on the device at an instant a starter pinion engages with a engine ring gear and repeating impacts during a cranking period must be reduced. As a coupling between an internal gear and a housing of the reduction device, a flexible or a resilient coupling is disclosed herein. The flexible or resilient coupling relieves an excessive impact force at the engagement by permitting rotation of the internal gear relative to the housing, and reduces noise caused by the cranking impacts by permitting a small vibrating move of the internal gear. The flexible coupling is realized by a combination of a bumpy surface and projections coupled thereto.

  • Patent number: 5819583
Abstract: In a one-way clutch used in a starter for engines, a locking concave for locking a roller thereto is formed on a roller-moving surface of one clutch member having a peripheral surface facing a peripheral surface of the other clutch member having a wedge-shaped groove for accommodating the roller. A resilient member for disengaging the roller from the locking concave at the time of overrunning is accommodated in an annular groove, thus urging the roller radially outwardly. The roller is prevented from colliding with the locking concave at the time of overrunning so that vibrations and noise are not generated.

  • Patent number: 5711739
Abstract: A planetary gear transmission gear system comprises a main planetary gear train composed of a main sun gear, a main ring gear, and main planet gears. The main sun gear is driven by an input rotary shaft to rotate. A sub planetary gear train is included to have a sub sun gear, a sub ring gear, and sub planet gears, and has a different gear ratio from the main planetary gear train. The sub sun gear is connected to rotate together with the main sun gear. A common carrier supporting the main and sub planet gears is rotatable about a common center axis and is drivingly connected to rotate an output shaft. A lock mechanism releasably fixes the main ring gear in order to allow the main planet gears to rotate about the center axis as the main sun gear rotates with the main ring gear fixed. A one-way clutch is connected to permit the sub ring gear to rotate in a first direction and to prohibit the sub ring gear from rotating in a second direction opposite to the first direction.
