Patent number: 5115958Abstract: The hemostatic surgical instrument comprises a scalpel provided at its anterior end with an upwardly directed surgical blade. A unique guidance means, or plow-like structure, is connected to the anterior end of the scalpel, immediately beneath the surgical blade. The plow-like structure allows the scalpel to be positioned at an appropriate depth and location with respect to individual tissue layers during formation of an incision. The instrument further comprises a stapling device with curved edges that may be used in conjunction with the scalpel to provide for placement of rows of surgical staples on either side of an incision as the incision is formed, thereby minimizing bleeding. The stapling device preferably is composed of wheels pivotally connected with the scalpel, the wheels being rollable along the surface of the tissue and capable of sequentially ejecting staples on either side of an incision as the incision is formed by the scalpel.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 1990Date of Patent: May 26, 1992Inventor: Paul M. Patent number: 5108021Abstract: An optical fiber cleaving tool is disclosed having a frame with means for holding a fiber optic connector installed intermediate the length of an optical fiber against lengthwise movement, thereby providing a fixed fiber axis. A pair of selectively operable clamps are supported on the frame for engagement with the fiber at a location spaced from the connector, the clamps are further supported for slideable movement parallel to the fiber axis for placing a tension along the fiber axis to slightly enlongate the fiber. A pair of opposed, selectively operable fiber engaging members are supported on the frame for opposed engagement with the fiber, at least one of the members having a sharpened blade for scribing the fiber, the force placed on the fiber by one member being equal and opposite to the force placed on the fiber by the other member during scribing of the fiber for subjecting the fiber to zero torsion and zero bend stress.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 1990Date of Patent: April 28, 1992Assignee: Ensign-Bickford Optics CompanyInventor: Joseph J. Patent number: 5105687Abstract: For breaking out a drill rod joint, a hydraulic chuck is mounted by a housing for clampingly engaging a drill rod and for rotation to break a rod joint, the chuck being rotated by a first gear that is bolted to a drive tube which mounts the chuck. A hydraulic motor drives a second gear within the housing for rotating the first gear. A rack is mounted for tangential movement by a rack mount which is movable radially inwardly to move the rack teeth for engaging the first gear teeth while a first spring mechanism constantly resiliently urges the rack mount to a retracted position so that the rack teeth are not engagable with the gear teeth even though the rack is tangentially moved by a first hydraulic ram that is operable for moving the rack to a tangential advance position. A second spring mechanism urges the rack radially outwardly, a second ram being operated to radially move the rack mount and thereby the rack to have the rack teeth engagable with the gear teeth.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 1990Date of Patent: April 21, 1992Assignee: Longyear CompanyInventor: Ivor N. Patent number: 5090606Abstract: A combustion gas powered fastener driving tool includes inlet and outlet openings through which the combustion gases are discharged from a combustion chamber. These openings are located above the uppermost driving position (top dead center) of a slidable piston, so that an air and fuel mixture is fully trapped in the combustion chamber until after it is combusted. Since an outflow of the unburnt air and fuel mixture is completely prevented, the rate of fuel consumption of the fastener driving tool is high and there is no danger of accidental explosion of unburned fuel even when the fastener driving tool is used in a badly ventilated working place or site. An electric fan for forcing fresh air into the combustion chamber is disposed outside the cylinder and isolated from high temperatures. The fan is durable in structure and reliable in operation.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 1990Date of Patent: February 25, 1992Assignee: Hitachi Koki Company, LimitedInventors: Takuji Torii, Hiromu Utsumi, Shinki Ohtsu, Yo Kawakami, Teruo Suzuki, Yoshimitsu Kawasaki, Toshifumi Kubota, Yoshinori Ishizawa, Tsunehisa Terayama

Patent number: 5080275Abstract: There is disclosed a surgical instrument for implanting in bodily tissue, wound staples each comprising two legs and a crown connecting the legs. The staples are moved in succession out of a magazine onto an anvil, to be deformed thereon by means of a driver. The driver is lowered from a position of rest towards the staple on the anvil, and is further moved to close the staple on the anvil by bending the staple theraround, and to insert the legs of the staple into the bodily tissue. For problem-free and symmmetrical deformation of the staple, a hold-down device is lowered onto the anvil and upon deformation of the staple thereon presses the crown of the staple onto the anvil and so prevents the staple from moving laterally during its deformation.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 1990Date of Patent: January 14, 1992Assignee: Beiersdorf AGInventors: Albert Heimerl, Holger Kartheus, Hans Pietsch, Bernd Voss
